Search and rescue teams have recovered the remains of a swimmer who was attacked by a shark off the coast of northern Israel, according to the country’s Fire and Rescue Authority. The remains were retrieved on Tuesday afternoon and have been taken to the Institute of Forensic Medicine for identification.

The missing swimmer has been identified by local media as a 40-year-old man from central Israel. The incident occurred at Olga Beach in the city of Hadera, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of Tel Aviv. Witnesses and footage shared on social media captured the moment residents on the beach screamed in shock as the attack unfolded.

Sharks are known to gather in this area, where warm water is discharged by a nearby power plant, especially during this time of year. However, such attacks are considered extremely rare, and there have been no recorded fatal shark incidents in Israeli waters since the country’s founding in 1948.

Police closed the beach promptly as rescue teams searched for the missing man. Online footage shows a man flailing in the water some hundreds of feet from shore, with witnesses shouting that he was being attacked by a shark. The incident has shocked the local community and raised concerns about safety in the area.
