A 25-year-old woman from north Queensland has been sentenced to five and a half years in prison for driving under the influence and causing a fatal crash near Mackay. Amy Ellen Ford pleaded guilty to dangerous operation of a vehicle, resulting in the death of 35-year-old Jamie Winn, who was riding his motorbike to work at the time of the accident.

The incident occurred in 2023 after Ford had consumed four drinks at a hotel in Marian, located about 28 kilometers from Mackay. Crown Prosecutor Monique Sheppard revealed that Ford veered into the opposite lane on Mackay-Eungella Road, colliding head-on with Winn. Tragically, he died at the scene.

Following the crash, Ford called emergency services and confessed to having “a couple of drinks.” Subsequent testing showed her blood alcohol content was 0.089 percent, along with traces of marijuana in her system. Additionally, analysis of her vehicle indicated she was driving at speeds between 126 km/h and 139 km/h in a 100 km/h zone.
