Barefoot Driver Battles Venomous Intruder on Melbourne Freeway

2 min read

A shocking encounter unfolded on the Monash Freeway near Malvern, Melbourne, when a woman, traveling at 80 km/h, discovered a deadly tiger snake slithering up her leg. This alarming incident occurred around 10:40 a.m. on Saturday.

In a swift response, the woman managed to fend off the snake and maneuver through traffic before safely pulling over and exiting her vehicle. Victoria Police quickly assessed the situation, acknowledging the unusual nature of the intruder. “Needless to say, slapping the cuffs on this offender wasn’t an option,” they noted, as specialized assistance was summoned.

Tim from Melbourne Snake Control arrived promptly, successfully capturing the tiger snake, which had been spotted emerging from under the steering wheel. The snake, identified as one of the world’s fourth most venomous species, posed a significant threat, prompting an assessment by paramedics for the woman in her 40s. Although no injuries were reported, she was taken to The Alfred Hospital for further observation.

Snake safety expert Craig Adams advised drivers to remain calm in such situations. “Always assume a snake is venomous—leave it where it is and never attempt to pick it up,” he cautioned, emphasizing that snakes are protected under Australian law. Adams recommended finding a safe place to stop and highlighted that panic can exacerbate danger.

In contrast to this dramatic freeway incident, not all snake encounters occur in busy traffic. For those in New South Wales facing similar situations, Adams suggests contacting WIRES or a local snake-catcher for assistance.
