By 2071, the population of Australia may surpass 40 million, with Melbourne poised to overtake Sydney as the nation’s most populous city.
The most recent estimates made available by the Australian Bureau of Statistics are predicated on Australia’s fertility, mortality, and migration rates. By the end of June 2022, 67 percent of Australians were expected to reside in capital cities; by 2032, that number is expected to rise to 68 percent.
Net overseas migration was – 85,000 in 2020-21. With net overseas migration expected to reach 235,000, annual population growth is expected to be around 365,000 for the foreseeable future. This is expected to further exacerbated the rental market nationally
The country’s 26 million inhabitants in 2022 are expected to increase to between 34.3 and 45.9 million by 2071. With a population of 8.1 million people in 2022, New South Wales is on track to remain the most populous state in the country, growing between 0.4 percent and 1.2 percent each year, which is slightly higher than the average annual growth rate for Australia.
After adding natural population growth, it is expected Australia’s population will rise by 365,000 annually.
The annual growth rate of 1.2 percent is marginally higher than Australia’s average. Victoria is expected to surpass New South Wales in population growth, with its 6.6 million residents expected to increase to between 9.3 and 13.8 million by 2071, at a rate of between 0.7 and 1.5 percent annually.
With an annual growth rate of between 0.5 and 1.2 percent, the Sunshine State, home to 5.3 million people today, is expected to grow at a slightly faster rate than the national average and reach a population of 6.8 to 9.8 million by 2071.
