Doctors who passed the 48th (Special) Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) examination have urged the government to appoint all successful candidates in order to address the acute shortage of physicians in public healthcare.
At a press conference held Tuesday (30 September) at the National Press Club in Dhaka, the 48th BCS General Doctors’ Forum demanded swift action to fill thousands of vacancies.
Dr. Shadman Sakib Rafi, one of the doctors awaiting appointment, cited Health Ministry data showing nearly 12,980 physician posts remain vacant nationwide. “As a result, people at the grassroots are being deprived of adequate healthcare,” he said, noting that while the wealthy can seek treatment privately or abroad, ordinary citizens rely on government services.
Dr. Md. Al Muntasir added that the Health Ministry has already sent a requisition to the Ministry of Public Administration for the recruitment of an additional 3,000 doctors. He argued that appointments could be made from the merit list of the 48th BCS even before the final gazette is published.
The forum stressed that completing the recruitment process quickly would both ease the healthcare crisis and provide long‑awaited employment opportunities for qualified doctors who have already cleared written and oral exams.
