$312 Million Solar Farm Approved to Power 25 Percent of Northern Rivers Homes

A major renewable energy project with the potential to power one in four homes across the Northern Rivers region has been approved by the New South Wales government.

The Summerville Solar Farm, a $312 million development set to rise near the village of Rappville south of Casino, will produce enough electricity to supply around 36,000 homes. Census data from 2021 shows the region is home to approximately 143,000 dwellings.

The solar farm will generate 90 megawatts of power and feature a 360-megawatt-hour battery storage system. This will allow energy to be captured during the day and released to the grid during peak demand times or after sunset, helping to provide a more reliable and flexible renewable energy supply.

Construction of the project is expected to create around 200 jobs, offering a welcome economic boost to the area during its build phase.

NSW Minister for the North Coast and Lismore MP Janelle Saffin said the project would be especially meaningful for the small community of Rappville, which was devastated by the Black Summer bushfires.

“I find it exciting that we’re doing these transitions,” Saffin said, calling the development a sign of progress for both clean energy and regional resilience.
