A devastating road accident in Yemen’s southern Abian province has left 16 people dead, including women and children, after a passenger minibus and a fuel‑laden truck collided head‑on. The crash occurred on Tuesday along the highway connecting Mahfad and Lahmar districts.
Local media, citing eyewitnesses, reported that the minibus exploded immediately after the collision, erupting into flames that engulfed the entire vehicle within moments. The fire was so intense that the bus was completely destroyed.
Victims were rushed to the nearby Lawdar Hospital, where doctors said 11 of the 16 bodies were severely burned, with some so badly charred that identification has become extremely difficult. The fuel truck’s destruction caused the fire to spread rapidly, worsening the tragedy.
Fire service crews said they reached the scene quickly but struggled to bring the blaze under control due to the scale of the flames.
Local officials and witnesses described it as the worst road accident in Abian province so far this year.
